The Canada Games Pool was built in 1973 and has been a legacy in New Westminster serving both the public and competitive swimmers alike. City Council want to replace the current pool with a $100 million pool and recreation center that will severely limit competitive swimming (meaning no swim meets) and prevent Canada Games Pool from increasing public lap/lane swimming and lessons. THIS MUST NOT HAPPEN prior to the election. Don't let an outgoing council make this decision. A capital expenditure of this magnitude requires proper public debate. As more municipalities begin to replace aging recreational infrastructure they all seem to suffer from the same problem, a distinct lack of accommodation for the competitive athlete. 8 lane 50 metre competition ready pool please.
For the number of aquatic athletes in BC, we already have too few competitive, regulation pools. We need to continue to support and grow this sport by making the right decisions. We need the Hyack Pool for all our swimmers. Mom of a CDSC swimmer.
The new pool needs to be 10 lanes for hosting regional, provincial and national competition. It benefits the local economy as swimmer families spend lots of money for meets and at local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, gas station and grocery stores.
This pool is an asset to overall fitness and wellbeing supporting the concept of cradle to the grave swimming. The Hyack Swim Club is willing and able to assist in raising funds for it. The council is not looking ahead to the future of the athletes young and old.
New West is a growing city. They must plan with the immediate and long term future in mind. They also are home to one of the most successful swim teams in the province/country. ..kids are flocking to swim teams since Rio, especially girls (the Penny effect)...
Why spend money to change a swimming pool that proved itself to be beneficial to community. Kits was renovated last year. It used to be filled with ocean water, now it is chlorine water?!
Do not make the same mistake they made at the Grandview Pool in Surrey,

Swimming for hyack growing up with there great facility helped me achieve my dreams of competing in the Paralympic games, in 2008 Beijing. The fact that thsy want to change the facility to a 25m pool is dumbfounding, and must be stopped.
