As a grad of UCI's Ph.D. in Philosophy, I believe it is important to support academic freedom and encourage honest, open, academic discussion of issues. Scholarship should be neither bought nor quelled with threats.

As a member of the Graduate Program Committee in History, I'm signing this in solidarity with students, and out of concern for student safety. The forms of research recommended by the DCF and its representatives on campus are not compatible with academic freedom and public university research/pedagogy.

Let's not just insert paid chairs, we need to keep the composition of our school as democratically transparent as possible. If you want these people to become chairs, subject them to a vote and allow all current staff, faculty, and students to participate in the decision-making process.

UCI Humanities must reconsider this move. It will prove to be a terrible mistake. It seems absurd to make such decisions without consulting the South Asianists on the faculty in the UC system.

This is absolutely unacceptable. It is imperative for universities to remain free from outside influence and pressures in order to create and disseminate peer-reviewed, substantiated knowledge, NOT propaganda. STOP!
