We, the undersigned, together with the family and friends of Daniel Bedford, urge Governor Kasich to commute Daniel Bedford’s death sentence, scheduled for May 17, 2011. Daniel was sentenced to death for the 1984 murder of Gwen Toefert and John Smith.

--- Mr. Bedford is mentally retarded but was convicted before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution bars the execution of a mentally retarded person. No court has ever heard his evidence supporting this claim.

--- Mr. Bedford has other severe mental impairments. He has significant memory problems and does not remember events like his father's murder when he was a child and his own trial

--- Recently, his condition has deteriorated even further as a result of dementia and other health conditions, including seizures, fainting spells, head trauma, and stroke-like brain injuries. These impairments have led to a life long struggle with the most basic concepts necessary to function on a

day-to-day basis and continue to prevent Mr. Bedford from helping his attorneys save his life.

We deeply sympathize with the Toefert and Smith families, but we respectfully offer that another death will neither resolve nor heal this tragedy.

Action petitioned for: We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Governor Kasich to commute the sentence of Dan Bedford to life without parole.
