Subject: Action Needed on Long-Neglected and Derelict Properties in Daniels Hill
To the Honorable Mayor, Members of City Council, and City Officials of Lynchburg:We, the residents of Daniels Hill, respectfully petition the City to take decisive action regarding the derelict and long-neglected properties within our neighborhood. Many of these structures have stood for years marked “unfit for habitation,” posing not only a visual blight but also a serious hazard to public safety and the stability of our community.
Daniels Hill is one of Lynchburg’s most historic and beautiful neighborhoods, but it has suffered greatly from the neglect of property owners who have allowed their buildings to decay beyond repair. For years, residents have lived beside houses with collapsing roofs, broken windows, and overgrown lots. These abandoned properties attract vandalism, rodents, and crime, while discouraging investment and pride among those who continue to care for their homes.
We recognize that the City already has ordinances in place to address property maintenance and public safety. Our plea is that these codes be actively enforced and, where necessary, that the City take steps to acquire or demolish structures that have remained unsafe and derelict for an extended period of time. For properties with historic or architectural value, we urge timely action toward rehabilitation and reuse—before neglect makes such preservation impossible.
This petition is not merely a complaint; it is a call for partnership. Daniels Hill residents are committed to restoring and protecting the character of our neighborhood. We ask the City to stand with us by ensuring that absentee owners are held accountable and that longstanding blight is removed for the good of the community.
Every year of inaction deepens the harm and erodes the trust of those who still believe in Daniels Hill’s potential. We urge the City to make this issue a priority now—before another year passes with the same “unfit for habitation” signs still hanging on the same neglected doors.
