Drivers and children of Port Alberni are in danger of a serious accident. Drivers are fighting their way through the 2 busy lanes of traffic twice a day. Alberni Elementary is located on the corner of Johnston Rd (considered Hwy 4) and Helen st. This requires drivers to squeeze through 2 lanes of busy traffic. Also on the opposite corner is Tim Hortons the only coffee shop you pass by directly to continue your drive to the west coast. Port Alberni is considered the "gateway" to the west coast and there is a high volume of traffic using this route to travel to see bc's beautiful west coast. Safety needs to addressed there has been numerous near misses and crosswalks are dangerous. Picture you are a mother walking home with your 2 young children, you check both directions and proceed across the crosswalk after stepping of the curb you see a car headed right for you! Yesterday, I witnessed a mother grab her children and pull them out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. As this car stops suddenly trying to avoid hitting people in the crosswalk a vehicle in the right hand lane nearly hits the back of the car. This needs to change please help keep our streets safe and sign this petition for action!

My daughter goes to school at alberni elementary and it is a very dangerous intersection. There are so many children crossing before and after school. I have witnessed many close calls at the cross walk. It would be great to see more control over this intersection.

I totally agree with this, something needs to change, at that corner. My daughter and I have been almost hit a few times in the past few years of her attending at the school that now when I drop her off I don't even I no longer use that crosswalk. "Somethings got to change"

As a driver and a parent of a child that attends this school, I completely agree. Something is needed to make this crosswalk safer. Either this or eliminate this area being a drop off zone all together. The worst part is a lot of children still don't understand the importance of making sure the way is clear.

This has been an issue for more than 30 years. Let's get a proper light here, AND left and right hand feeder lanes.

My son goes to this school, trying to get up the hill after picking him up is a nightmare. A light really is required and would improve safety for pedestrians and drivers.

This has been a problem since I went to this school in the 1980s and it has only gotten worse with increased traffic and the Tim Hortons across the street.

I usually end up running my kids across the street because I myself have nearly been hit on a number of occasions on the crosswalks between Gertrude and Helen Street.

We don't want to see anyone get hurt and that is a dangerous corner.
