We are in the middle of a major public health crisis. What each of us does affects everyone. This is not one of those situations where it is up to each individual to make a choice for him or herself. With every day we fail to understand it, we add ten to the end of this and countless deaths to the already astronomical death toll. If the government is unable or unwilling to put an end to such health hazards as social dancing in the middle of a respiratory pandemic (which is currently the third leading cause of death in the USA), we must self-regulate. The easiest way to do so is by withdrawing all future support from those who have put others in danger and showing support to those who chose to prioritize the safety and lives of others.

PLEASE INCLUDE MY FULL STATEMENT- I think this pledge is a great symbolism of unity to collectively be responsible as a dance community and keep everyone safe. Kudos for that. That being said, the “elephant in the room” needs to be addressed regarding ACCOUNTABILITY because plenty of promoters/DJs/Instructors/Dancers are still opting to dance at socials and attend classes at studios; which, had a counterproductive result to the point of the pledge. The word of the street is that the responsible part of the community has spoke to the irresponsible part aside, behind close doors so to speak and the irresponsible and selfish part of the community still chooses to run classes and facilitate socials, attend said socials and DJ there. There should be no social dancing nor in person classes regardless of whether you have a partner or not. It’s too much to risk; there’s data that has been shown of the after effects battle of COVID. My point is when are dance community leaders going to publicly call out these irresponsible leaders because dancers with no self-discipline are watching! Maybe, if they saw how the responsible part of the community expressed their non-approval for such events publicly; maybe that selfish and irresponsible part of the community would CEASE THEIR BEHAVIOR. Let’s keep it real: The promoters/instructors/dancers/DJs attend these events to find an opportune moment to shine on their brand, they are about the clout, they are about getting your money over the care of your health and life!!! The Governor of VA established new updated guidelines to prevent and mitigate COVID as a response to the rise of COVID cases going up nationwide. As a response to the new guidelines, an organizer moved up their social event for today, Nov. 15th, from 1p-6p for “last chance to dance”! It’s not about the last chance to dance; it’s about they rather keep your money over caring for your health!!! Let them keep your money and stay home!!!!! So, as you sign this pled

In a pandemic, partnered social dancing is the first to close and will be the last to restart. With 40% of COVID cases being asymptomatic, there is no way to guarantee safety with the skyrocketing cases right now.

I have not danced since February. I have seen coronavirus up close as a hospital nurse. I will not be dancing at socials until it is truly safe to do so and I implore others to do the same. There is no safe gathering of any type right now.

I value the lives of my students, colleagues, and friends. While I miss social dancing, I want to make sure that we all make it to the other side of this public health crisis healthy and whole.
