Dr Peiris, a reader at UCL, was not given her position based on her gender, ethinic background or nationality and achieveing the position of reader at UCL is by no means easy. Dr Aderin-Pocock has also successfully been awarded three fellowships - again this is a significant achievement, especially in an increasingly competitive scientific environment. If the Daily mail employed people of equivalent competence at their jobs, I'm sure I wouldn't need to sign this petition.

Very sad that the Daily Mail continues to publish such ignorant rubbish. A full formal apology should be made to Dr Peiris and Dr Aderin-Pocock.

The was great science interpreted for a wide UK audience by UCL's great scientists. I've never seen a more graphic example of the superficial bigotry of which the Daily Mail is often suspected.

It is ridiculous and sad that the Daily Mail chose to focus on the skin colour of the two (highly qualified and accomplished) scientists rather than the real story, which is this significant discovery! To me, that seems like a shameful waste of news resource and a sign of blatant racism.

As a Professor of Astrophysical Sciences in Princeton University, I can attest to the high level of expertise Drs. Peiris and Aderin-Pocock have in the field of cosmology in general, and measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background in particular.

Astonishing that such blatant racism and sexism considered acceptable in 21st century media. One assumes, unless the Mail issues an official and public apology that they endorse these views and are happy to be seen as a racist and sexist rag.
