President of University of St Andrews Astronomy society. In the eyes of science all humans can contribute equally, in the eyes of the Daily Mail only white male contributions are more important. This is a terrible message to send to society.

The Daily Mail ought to be ashamed the world of astronomy and science is moving forward quite nicely attracting top brains from both genders and ethnic backgrounds thankfully our minds are too busy to have the stupid thoughts this journalist has.

utterly disgraceful comments by an out-of-touch, ignorant, waste-of-space, embarrassment of a newspaper.

A most unfortunate attitude to 2 fine astronomers doing astronmy at the edge of current capability in a highly exciting area. I thought such attitudes were a thing of the past and has no place in the prosecution of science.

Again the Daily Mail show abundant ignorance, phobia and lack of general intellegence. There is strong evidence that this journalist is not familiar with the scientific workplace and the inherent diversity and international co-operation that embodies and defines it. Comments such as these are dangerous to the wellbeing of UK and global scientific endeavour. Sharpen up, or shut up! An apology is most definitely warranted - and the newspaper should realise itmight be their only way to save face after such a howling error in judgement.

As a female scientist, I am disgusted by the attitudes shown towards these two scientists in the Daily Mail.

So which features of Mr Mackay's ethnicity qualify him to write bigoted, boorish drivel for the Daily Mail?
The Daily Mail obviously can't understand that people who are not 'white males' can possibly achieve anything in the field of Science

Science is about research, the background of the scientists should have no bearer on it.
An astonishing comment to make in appalling taste and insulting to these two talented professionals. A public apology is very much deserved.
no excuse for this sort of ignorant bigotry in 21stC.
