Coach Gene Chizik has intentions of including a Chaplain on his football staff and AD Jamie Pollard agrees "...he (Coach Chizik) contends student-athletes are under a lot of pressure and need access to spiritual guidance." (as quoted by the Des Moines Register) Approximately 100 faculty members at Iowa State decided that they would sign a petition to protest this right. According to the Des Moines Register, "Faculty members behind the petition said hiring a chaplain is improper at a public university given the separation between church and state." This of course is referring to Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists and NOT the Constitution of the United States. IT prohibits the federal legislature from establishing a religion or prohibit free exercise of religion which hiring a team Chaplain obviously does not infringe upon. A team Chaplain helps student-athletes handle stress, improve their morals (less crime), thus improving their chance for a successful career at and beyond Iowa State. By signing this petition you are in favor of supporting Iowa State Football, and its right to improve its program and its players, and overall, Coach Chizik's decision to hire a team Chaplain.

I have been thinking a lot about the pushback from the faculty and it really just feels like a misunderstanding of what a chaplain actually does for these guys under all that pressure. It is funny how people cling to a letter instead of looking at the actual stress these athletes face every day and how some spiritual guidance could actually help them navigate that instead of falling apart. I am still digging into the legal side of things because this is not about establishing a religion but about giving kids a resource they need to succeed.

the job of a college coach is to develop the whole person, not just the athlete. chizik is doing the right thing.

Go Cyclones! These kids need someone to talk to when things get tough. Leave the coach alone.

Football is a high pressure environment. having extra support for the players is just common sense.

This is just people looking for something to be mad about. Support the team and the coach.

KEEP CHURCH AND STATE SEPARATE? Give me a break. It's about helping the kids deal with stress. Totally support this.

Ridiculous that faculty is wasting time on this. If the players want a chaplain then let them have one!!
