With each new technology that is being introduced to the world, the risk of cyberbullying climbs higher and higher. The worst part is, not enough is being done to put an end to it. While the laws surrounding cyberbullying are there, the enforcement of them is too weak.

A Canadian Teachers Federation commissioned poll (2008) shows that out of all of the Canadians surveyed, 34% of them knew of students who have been targeted through cyberbullying by other students in the past year. One of five of them were aware of teachers who had been cyberbullied. One in 10 of them knew of someone close to them who had been cyberbullied. Cyberbullying was ranked by Canadian teachers as their highest issue of concern out of the six listed options and 89% stated that bullying and violence was a serious concern for public schools.

A Kids Help Phone survey (2007) found that out of the 2,474 kids (aged 13-15) surveyed, over 70% of them reported to having been bullied online and 44% of them have been bullied at least once. This same study also revealed that many of these kids were unaware that cyberspace is not personal and that once the information is released, it is difficult or impossible to control.

According to the i-SAFE foundation , about 1 in 5 teens have posted or sent sexually suggestive or nude pictures of themselves to others, more than 1 in 3 of young people have experienced cyberthreats online, and fewer than 1 in 5 cyber bullying incidents are reported to law enforcement. Cyberbullying is one of the top reasons for teen suicide, stress, and depression.

These staggering numbers are a clear indication that cyberbullying has become such an issue that the law must take a greater part in the prevention of cyberbullying.. Greater awareness needs to be made of the consequences of cyberbullying,, and more officials should be involved to track down cyberbullies.
