That internet sites such as Amazon, Trip Adviser, Facebook and Twitter should be required to divulge the names of those who are overly-critical or abusive when referring to members, goods or services. At present, these sites are blighted by people who are often inspired by envy, rage or spite. Businesses are now being blackmailed in return for good reviews. Anonymity makes these people even more powerful but those whose businesses/reputations are trashed are powerless to fight back. Once comments are made it is almost impossible to make internet sites retract them. If these people were afraid that their identity might be revealed, they would think very carefully about what they say. And those who are insulted would have the power of knowing the names of their detractors. The internet is a powerful tool, but sites must take more responsibility for stamping out anonymous abuse. Only then will we have open and honest debate as well as protecting the most vulnerable in society.
