Thanks for the clarification on the funding. I agree that many students benefit from athletics - but not all do. With such limited funding in general for schools, we should be questioning the value of sports team athletics for all of the students. We should make education a first priority in school. Perhaps it's time to look at 100% participant, private and non-profit funding for school sports. I'd rather see any extra money within the district spent on teachers rather than coaches.

As I read this, of the $2,600 per student windfall that is coming in, this petition is asking that approximately $100 of that be spent on athletics. I agree that some of this money should also be spent on the underfunded music program and the remaining 90%+ of the new money be spent on the more important academic subjects.

As I read this, CVUSD will receive from the state an extra $2,600 per student. What this petition is asking is that approximately $100 of that $2,600 windfall be spent on athletics. That seems fair to me. What percentage of students participate in athletics at CVHS? My guess would broadly be a significant 40% - 50% of the student population. I would also like to see funding for music. I am signing this petition because it is the right thing to do. At the same time I am very disappointed with the families of athletes who did not pay for their own kid's participation fees and instead simply enjoyed the welfare of others. I am not sure what this says about the sportsmanship, teamwork, and citizenship goals of the athletic program. I find it difficult to believe that anyone living in Castro Valley cannot find a way to pay between $225 and $350 for benefits their child receives, instead expecting their child's teammates to pay for them.
