Please bring the School Bus to Shiloh Oaks! We are south of William Cannon, tucked between Menchaca Rd. & Westgate Blvd. Our neighborhood has gone through a resurgence and is booming with school age children. Shiloh Oaks makes up about 50% of the area zoned for Cunningham Elementary School.
Per the AISD Transportation Policy, students who live under 2 miles from their designated school will not be on a bus route UNLESS they would be subject to hazardous traffic conditions if they were to walk to school. (1) We feel this walking route IS hazardous for school age children as Menchaca at William Cannon is on the City of Austin's High-Injury Roadways list. (2)
In addition to dangerous roads, traffic and walk ways, we feel some interactions are also of concern. With high levels of foot-traffic in the area, exposure to panhandling, alcohol and substance abuse or other behaviors may occur during their walk to and from school. These factors should be taken into consideration on safety for children.
While our City is experiencing rapid growth, AISD policies need to grow with it. If our children's walk path down Menchaca and across William Cannon is not deemed hazardous then we request proper changes be made to the AISD Hazardous Conditions Policy.
Menchaca Road is part of the City’s Transit Priority Network as defined in the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP). There are no dedicated bicycle facilities along the corridor and pedestrian beacons are needed. (3) The City of Austin has recognized the lack of safety along Menchaca Road. It is time for Austin Independent School District to do the same.

I spent the morning walking the path our children are expected to take and it feels even more dangerous than I described. I am currently gathering accounts from other families in Shiloh Oaks to present a full picture of these risks to the district office.

Seeing this many neighbors unite confirms that I am not the only one terrified by the thought of our children walking that intersection. The momentum behind this movement proves that our demand for safer commute policies can no longer be ignored by the district.

Our children deserve a safe and reliable way to get to school besides relying on parents for transportation. I would never allow my child to walk from our home (located near William Cannon and Menchaca) to Cunningham Elementary. Not only is it unsafe from a traffic stand point, there are many aggressive panhandlers at these intersections. All around it is highly unsafe. Please bring bus transportation to our neighborhood.
Please! There’s no way we are walkable due to the intersections with William Cannon!
Manchaca is unsafe for school children to walk on. Drivers turning at that intersection often break the law, running red lights and cannot be relied on to follow traffic laws.
I have seen cars run this red light countless times. This is not a safe area for children, even with a crosswalk and signals as drivers treat them as mere suggestions most of the time. I've seen someone hit by a car and die in the street - please don't put our neighborhood children in this danger.
I have 3 children who will be a part of the Cunningham community for the next 10 years. I do not feel safe sending them down mencahca/william cannon at their age. Please make a change for these students who deserve a bus route. Thank you for considering our call to action!

I have 2 currently at Cunningham for the next five years with another one that was at Cunningham for the past 5yrs and westgate and William Cannon is not a safe intersection for anyone to cross let alone a child. School Bus route is needed for this area.
