Many patients face discrimination in the medical field because of cultural barriers and/or language barrier. These barriers lead to confusion and misunderstandings which in turn leads subpar medical treatment, patient noncompliance, and sometimes even death.

In years past there was a sociology course required on our campus for nursing students to graduate. Due to difficulty in the course it was eventually cut from the curriculum. We believe because nurses spend a significant amount of time with patients that it is important to know the basics about different cultures and how to best assist people of different backgrounds.

We are Petitioning Cal State San Marcos Nursing Faculty to ReInstate Mandatory Cultural Sensitivity Training for Nursing Students.

Updates

May 8, 2017

The feedback I have received from current nursing students confirms that the need for cultural competency training remains a critical concern. I am currently reaching out to faculty members to schedule a formal discussion regarding the reinstatement of this curriculum requirement.

May 8, 2017

The momentum behind this initiative continues to grow as more members of our community recognize the necessity of cultural competency in nursing education. This collective progress indicates a strong desire to improve the standard of care for every patient who enters our healthcare facilities.

There are other ways to cut costs. Diversity training should always remain part of a curriculum.
