CSUSM Sensitivity Training Course

Many patients face discrimination in the medical field because of cultural barriers and/or language barrier. These barriers lead to confusion and misunderstandings which in turn leads subpar medical treatment, patient noncompliance, and sometimes even death.
In years past there was a sociology course required on our campus for nursing students to graduate. Due to difficulty in the course it was eventually cut from the curriculum. We believe because nurses spend a significant amount of time with patients that it is important to know the basics about different cultures and how to best assist people of different backgrounds.
We are Petitioning Cal State San Marcos Nursing Faculty to ReInstate Mandatory Cultural Sensitivity Training for Nursing Students.
