Daniel Wright Middle School student safety has been a challenge for many families due to the location of the crosswalk, bus traffic patterns, road traffic and speed, and before and after school activities. We hope this petition will place a focus and resolution on these issues so our children will not face undo risk getting to or coming home from school.

Our current situation has buses entering and leaving from both exits within X feet of the pedestrian crosswalk.

It is estimated that over 16% of students either walk, are dropped off, and/or picked up every day. This number can change with nice weather and school activities, i.e. band, orchestra, sports, clubs, etc.

There are 3 issues:

1) Crosswalk

2) Traffic and speed on Riverwoods Rd.

3) Traffic flow

SOLUTION TO THE CROSSWALK ISSUE:

a) Light to press to make drivers aware of students preparing to cross at the crosswalk.

b) Move the crosswalk to the North Side of DW, extending the sidewalk, and installing a traffic light/sign so our children avoid majority of the cars leaving DW from the current exit route.

SOLUTION TO THE TRAFFIC ON RIVERWOODS RD:

a) Install 2 solar powered "Your Speed" signs X feet from the crosswalk, one each direction. Currently, the village has placed a temporary marque heading southbound asking for traffic to slow down. We need a permanent solution.

SOLUTION TO THE TRAFFIC FLOW ISSUES:

a) Again, move the crosswalk north of DW to separate the "walkers" from the car and bus traffic. Riverwoods traffic watches for cars and buses entering and exiting more than students crossing at the crosswalk.
