Through Elm Shakespeare I often work with the SCSU students and faculty. Representation is important, especially in theater which is supposed "to hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature."

The "real world" theatre industry is slanted against artists of color, but that does not mean that status quo should not change, especially not in educational programs where future professional actors, directors, and designers are developing their skills. SCSU as a community, and Greater New Haven as a whole, has an incredibly diverse population; it is absurd that our shows are cast with mostly white actors. It is only fair that our university theatre productions represent the diversity of our community and put more effort into reaching out to artists of color on and off campus. Our stories as people of color are worth being told. Crescent Players and the theatre department needs to practice what they preach about anti-racism and other social justice issues.
