I believe that the current crisis response within the mental health system in New Zealand does not attend to the needs of kiwis as it is difficult to get access to it and many people were being turned away for not being considered sick 'enough'. The current policy for the crisis response says specifically on the Minister of Health website that only in case of emergencies, the number can be called. However, it's not really specific on what an emergency would be and the wording and criteria should be changed. Due to this wording and criteria, a lot of high-risk people are being turned away and not able to receive proper care to prevent tragedies.

This petition is really important because it will provide early intervention and prevention of suicide risks, improve youth mental health and assist people earlier with their well-being. This is important because was creating a certain taboo of Mental health and illness when people were being turned away for not being considered too sick, which can make the suicide rates greater. Therefore, by changing the crisis response saying that any mental illness and that mental health should be taken seriously at every stage.
