It was sad to see so many fishing lines caught on to the corals and hear about another caught and tangled on a sea turtle. It's a beautiful haven and it should be saved.

Having just been to Vieques and enjoyed the diving, although not as spectacular as some destinations, I would hate to see the pristine nature of the beaches spoiled but a glut of tourists such as a cruise ship would bring. Also, the recent opening of the pier to local fishing on the end of the pier makes diving and snorkrling a hazard.

As I have commented on Facebook, the building at the end of the pier was built specifically for ferry service. If this petition is successful, wil that preclude it's use by ferries and what alternative the the authors have?

Has anyone amongst the initiative' s initiators gotten in touch with Maryann Luckin of Coralations in Culebra? If there's anyone on the Spanish Virgins who knows how this is done and what's at stake... it's her. She's the one with the credentials!

I would suggests to the iniciators to do their homework. Research, educate themselves. Organize the community at a grassroots level. And then maybe forge ahead.
Pipe dreams are fine if they don't hurt anyone. I have been directly involved in the proposal, conceptualizing, etc. of several marine protected areas: 3Palmas, CEN, RMIV and others still in the strategic planning stage. Have founded and leaded several NGO's dealing with coastal issues...

Hi Ivette. The idea of the reserve is to conserve the area that is not accessible by the general public at the moment. In other words it's the end of the Rompeolas where the pier is located. All in all creating a marine sanctuary will not impact the recreational activities that are carried out there today. Viequenses will still be able to launch their boats and have water related activities, people will still be able to fish from the shore in the same areas they do now, the possibility of the short ferry is still viable, and snorkelers, divers and swimmers will have the opportunity to enjoy a protected area designated just for swimmers.

No, Ivelisse the proposal doesnot interfere with family activities. The actual sanctuary are the pilons at the end of the pier which extend a mile out to the ocean.
