Cosmetology I & II need to remain 3 Credits
Let your voice and opinion be known by TEA and the SBOE.
As you may already know, during the recent TEKS revision process, the Texas State Board of Education adopted revisions to all CTE courses statewide. It was the desire of the committee that worked on the revision for cosmetology courses that the applicable credits remain flexible to meet the needs of high schools. All Texas high schools are free to operate on an approved schedule and calendar in a way that best serves their students. Some may choose block scheduling; others have 7,8 and even 9 classes per day. We did include a recommendation that if a solid credit assignment was absolutely necessary it would absolutely need to be 3 credits.
When the SBOE adopted our courses they received a recommendation from TEA that that Cosmetology I and II should be set at 2 credits. They complied with that recommendation and assigned both courses 2 credit each.
Recent conversations my district has had with TEA suggests that they believe there are in fact a large number of schools offering Cosmetology I and II for 2 credits. Furthermore, they also offer that schools should simply combine courses piece by piece to offer enough contact hours.
I believe that the SBOE needs to hear from you. If you would like to continue offering Cosmetology I and Cosmetology II for 3 credits beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, please join this initiative to request that they revisit the issue.
The SBOE will meet again in April 2016 Please sign this petition and if you are able, make plans to attend the meeting and register to give testimony
