My fiancee attended Converse and has always spoken highly of the positive experience she had. The fact the Converse was an all-women's college was very important to her. It was one of the reasons she chose Converse, and one of her favorite things about the school. The strong women's community at Converse helped her grow into an amazing woman. For Converse to sell-out and go co-ed is a betrayal of everything they stand for.

Converse is a place where young women can feel comfortable learning and growing into diplomatic, strong, female leaders. A professor I had here pointed out that as she works at both Wofford and Converse, Converse women are different. She said that we sit differently, we take up more space, we participate more, and we voice our opinions. I never realized how true this is until she pointed it out. I went from sitting in my seat and trying to take up as little space as possible in high school to feeling comfortable enough to voice my own opinion in public. I shouldn’t have to see my best friend sob because she finally feels comfortable enough to raise her hand in class and having this freedom of expression threatened is heartbreaking for her.
Framing the idea of changing to co-ed as the only option left is wrong. It isn’t the only option and claiming that it is is fraudulent. Bluntly, having this announcement during exam week feels cold and calculated as many of the students have gone home and those that are still here don’t have the energy to focus on this issue and their exams. Going co-ed could be something to consider farther in the future after trying other options, but not right now. It isn’t fair to the incoming freshmen who have already paid their nonrefundable deposits to introduce this at any time during their academic career. This idea needs to be voted upon by the people it will actually affect- the students. This is not a town hall matter. This is a student body matter and this student body should matter the most.

Class of 2017. Off campus housing, outreach to other states, partnership with other women's colleges, more dual enrollment with other colleges and high schools, etc. This should be a last resort decision.
