I am in total support of UAB keeping their football program. I believe the UA BOT would be penny-wise and pound-foolish to order the end of Blazer football.

UAB has come so far in such a short time as a university, with a focus on a traditional undergraduate experience in addition to the exception professional and graduate programs offered. With a freshman residency requirement, the building of new residence halls, and the creation of a campus green are a great step towards this, but UAB football is a vital piece of the traditional undergraduate experience. From tailgating and marching bands to rivalries and homecoming, football nurtures school spirit and pride more than any other sport, especially here in the South. Without football, 85 students lose athletic scholarships, but so do the women athletes who have more opportunities due to Title IX, members of the marching band (why have a marching band if there is no football), the athletic trainers (no need for nearly as any without the largest sport), and all the other students who have opportunities due to the sport (internships in athletics, marketing, concession stands, and more). Some naysayers say that football should be cut since educating our students is central to the mission of the university, but what they fail to realize is that football IS providing these opportunities for our students. I could go on and on, but just know that I am a proud alumna of the university, giving regularly and spreading the word about my university every day - I do this because I had an incredible undergraduate experience, with many of my opportunities and memories being attributed to the presence of a football team. I was even able to cheer my Blazers on in Hawaii in 2004 and look forward to travelling to our next bowl game too. Our students, student-athletes, and alumni deserve the opportunity to continue supporting our football team, so I urge President Watts to do the right thing!

Hey BoT members: GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF UAB FOOTBALL! Your "bama" centric loyalties, couched in a disingenuous "UAB can't afford football argument" isn't fooling any of us. You liars are charged with providing equal representation of ALL UA system universities, not just those of your precious tide. Your pettiness is truly at an all-time low.

We've earned the right to have our own identity in all aspects of collegiate endeavor - athletics as well as academics. The BoT must stop their neurotic meddling in our affairs!
