Columbia Public School Board Members,

I believe making the Walking School Bus part of the Columbia Public Schools' transportation program is essential to the well-being and success of our children and our community.

Without a consistent, safe, and reliable program to ensure children can walk to and from school every day, children are walking less and being driven more. This can lead to traffic congestion, safety concerns, pollution and decreased levels of physical activity. All of these concerns are addressed by operating a coordinated Walking School Bus program. By integrating a Walking School Bus program into CPS’s transportation plan you are encouraging and instilling in our younger generations’ minds the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle while reducing traffic congestion and pollution and improving safety around our schools.

Further, this would be consistent with CPS's new transportation policy which states, "The Columbia Public School District shall promote safe walking and bicycling to school whenever possible."

This small but powerful change will resonate positively in all aspects of our community. 

I kindly ask that you incorporate the Walking School Bus program into Columbia Public Schools' transportation plan to ensure the program will continue for years to come.
