We want swim instruction at Trinity Middle School to continue during educational school hours.

On April 2, the Trinity Middle School (TMS) administration presented changes to curriculum for the 2015-16 school year. They recommended elimination of swim instruction thereby reducing the need for two Physical Education teaching positions.

We understand the need to cut costs. But we want the Trinity School District board, administration and teachers to work together to develop a program to continue to offer swim instruction during school hours. If additional funds are found, we would like your consideration for the addition of a third physical education teacher to facilitate the likelihood of a workable plan for educational hours swim instruction. We have many ideas including the hiring of a lifeguard, teaching only 6th or 6th and 7th graders, and teaching it only certain quarters. Although swimming is not a core class, knowing how to swim saves lives. Many students don't have resources or opportunities to learn this skill outside of school. Please continue swim instruction at Trinity Middle School.

Updates

April 6, 2015

The momentum behind this fight is proof that the school board cannot just sweep our kids' safety under the rug to save a few dollars. Trinity administration expects us to stay quiet while they gut these programs but we are clearly not going anywhere.

(7 year swimmer)Swimming is a life skill that everyone needs. Depriving students of this skill is a bad idea if trinity wants them to be safe from drowning and to encourage the swim team

Swim class is what gave me the the courage to go out for the swim team. You cant just take out swimming out of everyones lives.

I swam for trinity middle and high school teams. Swimming is a great sport and gives kids an alternative sport to be a part of. By the way, I don't see football being cut....or baseball..... try and cut one of those and see the uproar that happens. Swimming works the whole body, including the brain. Why keep taking from our kids! Take outlets from them only to give them doors of possible bad behavior instead. Doesn't make much sense to me.

THATS'S WHERE I LEARNED TO SWIM ,AND YES MANY CHILDREN WOULD NEVER LEARN TO SWIM WITHOUT THIS PROGRAM...MAYBE YOU COULD OPEN THE POOL TO THE PUBLIC FOR A COUPLE OF NIGHTS A WEEK FOR A FEE TO HELP OFFSET COST ...SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Children need swim safety. It shouldn't only be the rich students who can afford swim lessons.

Don't remove something that is critical to students. Maybe the school board should cut costs on some of the higher level administrative staff rather than taking away from the needs of the students.

This is a class that is needed. Benefits our children in many ways.. Including confidence and water safety. Find another area to cut!
