North Americans by and large are finally making it through one of the longest, coldest, wettest and most costly winters we have seen in many decades. On the heels of our latest storm comes the news that Enbridge has submitted a request to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to raise their gas rates by up to 40% and pass even further costs onto the consumer.
While we as consumers appreciate that Enbridge has encountered additional costs, it is the nature of the business they are in, in that they sell a commodity intended to counteract the impact of external, uncontrollable forces - it is not our responsibility to help Enbridge maintain a bottom line that appeases stock holders.
For the following reasons, we ask that the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) deny Enbridge's request to increase rates.

- Ontario consumer budgets are already strapped due to the additional heating and repair costs associated with this long and cold winter
- No such financial compensation for the long cold winter is being given to Ontario residents, and special consideration should not be extended to corporations
- Enbridge is only seeking to pass on additional expenses, but not savings. This increase only seeks to satisfy Enbridge's own corporate goals.
