The problem is that in the case where there are problems resulting in a need to restore the phone, we may be forced to upgrade to a later operating system even without choosing to. That, in turn, can introduce changes in functionality that we don't want, or cause existing applications to no longer run well.

I can install whatever operating system on my PC I should be able to do it on the Apple devices that I own. I should be able to do it on the android devices that I own and not be limited to only a few firmware packages

I bought my device, it's fully paid for, it's MINE now and I should be able to put whatever software I want on it. Resigning older firm wares is the way to go.

This is a fair compromise to those with old devices that can't afford to upgrade and whose devices are being slowed by new software they weren't built to handle.

This is how it should be and it's up to the consumer to upgrade or downgrade the software on their phones.
