I have never understood how someone could decide what is good for someone if the person deciding things didn't understand the problems of the people they represent. All the perks of the members of congress have nothing to do with the way the people they represent live. As a result the decisions made by members of congress have nothing to do to help the common citizen of the US. Until they have to live the way the people they represent have to live the decisions they make will not be a true representation of who they represent.
