Conflict Free UCSB Initiative

Since 1996, the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken the lives of 5.4 million people and displaced 1.7 million. It is the deadliest war since WWII and has received little international attention. Fueling this war is the illicit trade of conflict minerals-tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold. These minerals are key components in our electronics, in which we play a direct role. Armed groups control this trade, killing millions and using rape as a tool of war. The lack of tracing with these minerals allows companies and organizations to continue purchasing conflict minerals.

The UCSB Conflict Free Initiative is part of a nation wide campaign to build the consumer voice for conflict free electronics. Through public statements and passing resolutions favoring conflict free products, UCSB can help create a new standard for electronic companies. To ensure that your tuition no longer indirectly enables or contribute to the violence in Congo help make UCSB Conflict Free. As a professor or student at a technology University that has a high level of ethics and social responsibility, I support the Conflict Free UCSB initiative.
