Approximately 30% of the UK's rubbish is wasted food that is sent to landfills where it is buried with non-biodegradable materials. In a compost that is properly maintained, aerobic decomposition turns the organic matter into nutrient rich soil that can be used to as a fertiliser for gardens. In landfills, this organic material is smothered by rubbish creating anaerobic breakdown of materials which releases greenhouse gases (e.g. methane). By composting we are reducing the amount of landfill (a very large problem within itself), reusing valuable resources (nutrients for soil), and reducing greenhouse gases. Please sign this petition to get a compostable bin for food waste in Zoology Department canteen Darwin's. Consider starting home composting as well. Visit this site for information on how to set up composting for your home. http://www.oxford.gov.uk/PageRender/decER/Foodwasterecycling.htm
