Final supporters
Now that Spring has officially sprung many people are taking advantage of the nice weather and going for walks/runs. Many people walk/run "The Loop" around Candor. "The Loop" goes through the village and along Route 96 back into the village.
Here's the problem: there is no sidewalk along the stretch of Route 96. The current sidewalk stops at the Cemetery where the Village line ends and the Town line begins. This makes walking to the ice cream store, firestation, & fabric store dangerous for pedestrians. Especially for pedestrians with children.
This petition will show that the citizens (and visitors) of Candor support the idea of completing the sidewalk along Route 96. This project is still in the early stages, but gathering signatures will help our chances of getting funding for this project.
Speaking of funding, you may be wondering how the new sidewalk will be funded. The Town is seeking grants from the State to cover the majority, if not the entire cost of this project. We will be discussing this topic again at the next Town Board Meeting which will be held on June 13th at 7pm. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend the Board meetings that held on the second Tuesday of every month.

The feedback from neighbors about the dangerous stretch of Route 96 has been overwhelming. I am currently organizing these stories to present at the next Town Board meeting.

Friends and I often avoid "the loop" due to this very issue. Would love to see a sidewalk or walking/running path in place!
Yes please!!! I run this on almost a daily basis and that stretch is always scary!
While I am not a tax payer in Candor, I do work, exercise and socialize here. The sidewalk would be a great addition. As a teacher, I want the children out walking and getting exercise in a safe way. You have decided to have public buildings on that part of town, so it is very important to make it safe to access them via sidewalks. Food spots along that part of town also attract walkers. Please follow through with a sidewalk along 96A and 96 in town.
I grew up in Candor and moved away about 10 years ago. I would love to walk my kids around "the loop" as I used to back in the day. It's much safer with a sidewalk. Especially now a days. People are so pre-occupied and don't pay attention when driving.
i walk this 'loop' with my grandma, it would be much much safer and better for the community to have a sidewalk that is finished
I've always felt there should be a sidewalk that goes from both sides of route 96b to the Dandy Mart. Its way too dangerous for those of us usingbthat stretch of walk way to walk it safely. Just the little bit I have used it to walk to frowns has proved to be dangerous as many of the cars that drive past our house at 136 Owego St. do not bother to slow down to the 30mph as mandated by village and state law but instead have gone 40-60 thru here. At the least they should pull over more to the middle of the road but only when another vehicle isn't going the other direction.
I appreciate the beauty and the "flatter" opportunity for us hill folks in our upper years, to walk in a less stannous path !

And....we "mature" citizens are a tad slower when trying to a avoid a collision with a moving vehicle. Pour the concrete!!! Or, old slate stones.
