I am an experienced sociology teacher and am disgusted by the inclusion of the term 'anomie' in a GCSE exam paper. The specification does not even specify that we should cover functionalist views of crime, let alone 'anomie'! I am seriously considering changing exam boards.

The second paper in particular was very difficult with very specific questions and to top it off the exam does not give students thinking time to genuinely think of answers on the spot and for that reason I thought this paper was extremely unfair

Having taught this exam for years as well as having worked as an examiner for both papers, this was a shock; the odd 'obscure' questioning is acceptable but there were so many questions that many would not have been able to access at all and even the most enlightened GCSE student would have been hindered by a the choice to prolifically use terms applicable primarily A level students!

Sociology has been very well constucted in the last few years how ever this year was a disapointment as there were words not in the glossary, index or in the content of the aqa GCSE book. Many people wouls have had pottential to getting a good grade but it is this that will disallow people to be satisfied with their grade. The terms that were used in the exams may have fustrated students in the exams and werent able to do well at all. The grade boundaries should he lowered and students should get full marks on the questions they were asked which was not expected of them

As sociologists Marxists would say that this is capitalism. Since we go to a comprehensive school you gave us an outrageous paper so the bourgeoisie can stay rich and the poor to stay poor which is reproducing inequality. Functionalist would say we live in a meritocratic society but according to this paper, society is not equal as we received a level content in the GCSE exam.

I found that's this exams layout was very obscure to previous exams. The wording of the questions and the topics that came up were too brief as there wasn't much to talk about not forgetting the mention of a level keywords which are not in the textbook or specification

Thank God some ones came up with this idea! I felt prepared for sociology when revising and when completely thrown when discovering that I had no idea what some of the questions were. Not only the definitions but some questions were worded extremely badly, even my teachers commented.

As a teacher of Sociology I am disgusted and disappointed at AQA for undermining the confidence of my students and my credibility as a teacher. I have already complained to the exam board and I urge you all to get your teachers to do the same. Send e-mail to [email protected] Put complaint in the subject box. If we all act on this we could be a great example of new media improving democracy (now that's a decent question examiner!)
