Petition for Addition of a Skort Option to Girls’ Academic Uniform

To the Leadership and Board of Calvary Christian College,

We, respectfully request the introduction of a skort option within the girls’ academic uniform policy.

This request is made in support of student wellbeing, comfort, dignity, and equality while continuing to uphold the values, professionalism, and presentation standards of the school.

Many students have expressed discomfort and dissatisfaction with the current requirement for girls to wear skirts on academic days, particularly due to the lack of practical alternative options. Concerns raised include comfort during menstruation, ease of movement, weather conditions, and feeling limited compared to more flexible uniform choices available to other students. Students are not seeking to remove uniform standards, but rather to introduce a practical and respectful alternative, such as a skort option, that still aligns with the school’s presentation and values.

Reasons for This Request

Student Health and Wellbeing

Many students experience discomfort, pain, bloating, or health-related concerns during menstruation and other female health conditions. A skort option would provide students with greater comfort and confidence while still maintaining a neat and modest uniform standard.

Practicality and Participation

Skorts allow for greater ease of movement and can help students participate more comfortably in everyday school activities, walking between classes, sitting for extended periods, stairs, weather conditions, and school events.

Equality and Modernisation

Many Australian schools now provide students with flexible uniform options that maintain professionalism while recognising individual comfort and practical needs. Offering a skort alongside existing uniform choices promotes fairness and supports students in feeling respected and heard.

Maintaining School Values

This petition is not seeking removal of current uniform standards, but rather the addition of an approved alternative that aligns with the school’s expectations regarding modesty, presentation, and Christian values.

Proposed Solution

We respectfully propose:

An approved school-issued skort in existing school colours and style

Availability as an optional item for girls on academic days

Consistent standards regarding length, appearance, and presentation

We value our school community and hope leadership will consider this request thoughtfully and compassionately in the best interests of students. We appreciate the opportunity for this matter to be discussed further and respectfully hope the concerns raised by students can be formally considered by school leadership. Our intention is to work collaboratively toward a practical solution that supports student wellbeing, comfort, and inclusion while continuing to uphold the values and standards of the school community.

Research and public health reviews increasingly demonstrate that limited or restrictive school uniform options for female students can negatively affect both physical and mental wellbeing. Studies have found that traditional skirt-only uniform policies may reduce physical activity participation, particularly among girls who feel uncomfortable engaging in movement, sport, or everyday school activities while wearing skirts or dresses. Researchers have also identified links between restrictive uniforms and increased self-consciousness, reduced confidence, discomfort during menstruation, and barriers to inclusion and participation within the school environment.

1. The Global Cambridge University Study (2024)

This is the landmark global study proving that mandated school uniforms are directly linked to lower physical activity levels, creating a massive exercise gap that disproportionately impacts primary school-aged girls. [1, 2, 3]

2. The Australian Primary School Uniform Trial (2021)

This cluster-randomised controlled trial tracked students' actual steps and physical activity. It serves as strong evidence that traditional, formal school uniforms directly suppress everyday movement compared to activewear. [1, 2, 3]

3. Victoria University's National Uniform Study

This national study specifically investigated the psychological barriers caused by uniforms, demonstrating how girls feel restricted, self-conscious, and physically uncomfortable in traditional or poorly designed sports attire, causing them to drop out of physical activities.

In summary, this petition is not intended to remove, challenge, or disrespect the importance of formality, presentation, or the values upheld within the school uniform policy. Rather, we are respectfully seeking the introduction of an additional uniform option for female students through an approved skort alternative. Our aim is to support student wellbeing, comfort, practicality, dignity, and inclusion while continuing to maintain the professional standards and Christian values of the school community.
