We, the undersigned, stand together to urge the State of Minnesota to grant commutation of sentence for Lincoln Lamar Caldwell, who has spent years incarcerated for a crime in which the actual shooter will be released in 2029, while Lincoln faces a life sentence.

This is a clear and painful example of sentencing disparity and a failure of justice. Lincoln was not the shooter — yet he received the harshest punishment. Even more unjust, the four other individuals who were in the truck during the incident received no prison time at all.

Over the years, Lincoln has shown remarkable transformation — earning more than 17 certificates, including a diploma in painting and decorating, and dedicating himself to mentoring and teaching other incarcerated individuals. He has helped men rebuild their lives, offering guidance, leadership, and faith where there was once hopelessness. Through years of perseverance, Lincoln has become a pillar of strength and light behind the walls, inspiring many to choose a better path.

His contributions clearly show he is ready and deserving of a second chance at life outside of prison. Continuing to hold Lincoln for life, while the actual shooter will soon return to society and others involved served no time at all, is both unjust and unnecessary.

True justice should recognize rehabilitation, fairness, and redemption. We call on the Governor of Minnesota, the Board of Pardons, and the Minnesota Department of Corrections to grant Lincoln Caldwell a commutation of sentence, so he may return home, rebuild his life, and continue the work he has already begun in the community.

Justice is not just about punishment. It’s about restoration, redemption, and doing what’s right.
