Need to limit the number of Vacation Rentals. No wonder there's no places for people who want to live and work on the islands. It's always about the money even for the County to get their share.

What we need is a plan for making more affordable housing options available to support a more diverse and healthy community. One way to do this is to get more vacation rentals back into the housing pool to take some of the immediate pressure off the necessity to build more. I would also like to see realtors be prevented from advertising properties as "income opportunities" - our islands are not a commodity and should not be marketed as such.

Please honor the decision made in good faith by the Planning Commissioners on August 20th, 2021, to freeze the number of vacation rental (VR) permits at the current “Active and Compliant” number of 413, along with the associated island-specific caps.

I’m a small business owner on Orcas Island, and work hard to provide a service for my community. Despite this, I’ve been living with housing insecurity for almost 3 years, and this is a result of the over saturation of VRs on the island. Somehow second home ownership has become a primary source of income for people that aren’t even San Juan County residents.
Our community is rapidly changing, and working class people are being pushed out of their homes to accommodate tourists that our businesses can’t even handle. No businesses can hire staff, because their staff has nowhere to live. Long term rental prices are absolutely insane. There needs to be change NOW if we want to keep the San Juan Islands a place where people can live, work, and lead healthy lives enjoying this beautiful place that we call home. We need to work for our community and residents, and not put the interests of second home owners ahead of ours.

I do not support even the current number of vacation rental permits, much less an offer to extend more permits. The island does not need any more drains upon precious tax dollars

I forgot to mention that these properties need to be taxed as full fledged business-hotel and tourism taxes! These are businesses and I'd think that many don't report to the IRS- I know of several owners who over beer laugh at how easy it is together away with not paying taxes---the county is getting screwed since this source of funding is avoided when the fed's distribute money through a number of agencies.

Full disclosure, I’m an Air BB host out of my home. The summer income is extremely helpful since retirement and, have had some lovely, respectful guests. However, experiencing this new role, I’ve had some beneficial insights on tourism and our island’s future. Being located in Rosario proper, I’ve experienced an influx of new properties being developed with only vacation rentals. This development has absolutely changed the pulse of our beautiful neighborhood.. Now more people driving fast and sometimes recklessly on our curvy Rosario Road. This one example makes walking on the road, especially unsafe. Even guests have made note on how fast people are driving. I look at them in disbelief when I hear this. I definitely give them “the talk” on our Orcas culture and how and why our character is changing. I fully support this moratorium and hope in the long run, some appropriate solutions can be reached for the future of Orcas island because we need tourism obviously.
