Our BUSD community should not tolerate any forms of hate against anyone.

As a BUSD alum (Emerson, Willard, BHS Class of 2010) it greatly saddens me to hear about these incidents and the district’s failure to protect Jewish students. I never felt such fear as a BUSD student and it pains me to see that, in a district that prides itself on inclusion and open-mindedness (and was incidentally the first school district in the country to voluntarily desegregate), the district had failed to protect students from a historically marginalized group. These were not the values I was raised with or taught in BUSD schools.

A very concerned BUSD parent (12th grader and a graduate). All students need to feel safe and supported at school.

This lack of interference by the BUSD should not be tolerated. In Berkeley of all places.

I've been following postmodern theories for 20 years. It is not surprising that they've inflitrated institutions. The childish concept of oppressor/oppressed (settler-colonialists) makes Israel the bad guy (and sadly, we saw a few leftists justify the murder and rape of innocent people at a music festival, the kidnapping of children). Israeli is coded as "white" oppressor. So clearly, there is an extreme ignorance of Israel and history across the board. They have no similar statements about Azerbaijan, Myanmar, Sudan... I'm not sure kids will receive an accurate education about the history of the world, as humans moved out of Africa. Just today an email was sent from the superintendent about how Thanksgiving is "painful" and they support the rematriation of Berkeley land. But let's remember that NO ONE should be coded "bad" based on traits they have no control over. All this does is divide us. Perhaps this will finally be a wake-up call to everyone about these caustic theories and push them back in the ivory tower where they should have remained? I doubt it.

Signing as an ally who believes in separating people from governments, and who speaks out against antisemitism, racism, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab sentiment. Let's work to make all our students feel safe and seen. If we can't do it here, where can we do it?
