BUSD - EVERY student has the right to feel safe in schools. This is guaranteed under Title 6, enshrined in BUSD's 4E's, and your job. Rather than opining on issues out of the scope of this board, please do your job and focus on the issues before you. There is hate speech in BUSD. This is unacceptable and a violation of Title 6. What concrete measures are you going to enact to ensure ALL students are safe and supported within your institutions? When will these measures be in effect?

As, a parent of a BUSD graduate, and as a retired BUSD teacher, I am disappointed by the lack of support the administration and some teachers have shown for Jewish students in BUSD. All children deserve to feel safe at school, and to feel like the school cares about their needs. This can and should be kept separate from the politics of the present moment. Berkeley has been a pioneer in bringing together students from different backgrounds and cultures, and needs to do more at this moment.

My kids are in Albany. However, from a few years as a parent in the district, what's happening in near by districts, soon enough happens in Albany. This is very concerning

Parent of 3 BHS alum and former BSEP representative. Our family has always been great supporters and advocates for BUSD, please have Jewish students' care foremost in these troubled days. We are experiencing enough trauma without our children enduring this harassment at their "safe space".

Parent of two BAM third grade Jewish girls. I strongly support the psychological safety of Jewish, Islamic, and students of all races and ethnicities in our Berkeley schools, and the teaching message that a person’s race - ethnic - gender identity is not a statement of political support for a particular government’s policies.
Free speech and respect for different viewpoints is a whole separate topic!

BUSD: according to NPR today Jews are 2.4% of American society but are subject to 60% of religious motivated hate crimes.

My adult kids graduated Berkeley High during less fraught times but definitely did not get recognition of their own history of genocide and displacement ( grandkids of concentration camp survivors) as being a ‘real ‘ issue. I think what is happening now at BHS is a result of that lack of context… to reduce issues to good guys and bad guys when things are so much more complex. Where were the walk outs and outcry in October 7 th?
