Cognitive and social/emotional development and thus, achievement, has a direct correlation to the age of an individual. Connecticut students begin school at a younger age than students from any other state. So a 4-year-old faces the same rigorous Common Core standards as 5-6 year old students from around the country. Throughout his/her years in school, he/she will face the same standards and measurements as students who are up to a year older. A younger student may have the cognitive skills of his/her older counterpart, but still may struggle because of the stamina and maturity required to face the high standards. Or a student will be expected to understand abstract concepts before his/her brain is ready. Our intervention groups in every district are filled with the "younger" students (the "bers" - October, November, December). Our kids struggling socially/emotionally in middle and high school are often the students with late birthdays. Let's get Connecticut students on the same PLAYING FIELD! Sign below to help us change the entry age of our kindergartners and promote the chances of a solid foundation for our students and a fair stake in the Common Core...and LIFE!
