I survived growing up gay in Canada in the 1960s and '70s, but hearing some supportive voices would sure have made it a lot easier. And ow that I'm a writer I can't begin to countenance agenda-driven attempts to silence a book like this.

The words "vulgar" and "indecent" have been used far too often to describe books that actually show us something important about ourselves, including The Catcher in the Rye, and Ulysses. Attempting to strip this book of its award, especially when done by fellow writers, is a reprehensible act. It's fine not to like it; it's not fine to try to censor it. Support free speech! Read a banned book! Or read a book that people are attempting to ban.

Censoring and monitoring writing for children and young adults is an affront to their experience, intelligence and interest in the world. Frankly, if you think masturbation, bullying and gender/sexual identity does not matter to young people today, you have (1) not spoken to young people and/or (2) not listened to them.

I read the book long before the conservative, homophobic backlash began. As a queer person, the story deeply resonated with me. I wish a YA novel like this had been out there when I was coming out as teenager and navigating the perils of high school.

Not only will I read it, I've asked my 14-year-old son to read it too.
