Anyone who is shocked by the language and actions of some teens in this story is obviously out of touch with the reality of young people today. This novel provides needed insights to the challenges faced by LGBT young people. Unfortunately, the response by some readers is to attempt to bully the Governor General's Awards and Raziel Reid. A pity they didn't understand the message of the novel.

"Vulgar," from the root "vulgus," meaning "of the common people." In other words, a book about the lives of real people. So happy the Canada Council has stuck to its guns on the jury's decision to give the GG to fellow queer Raziel Reid. I'm off to buy myself a copy right this minute.

The exaltation of homosexuality is second only to the reverence paid to unfettered abortion as a litmus test for political correctness amongst our cognitive and cultural elites?!" What are people so afraid of?! Arsenal Press is known for publishing some VERY good work, including all of Ivan Coyote's gorgeous writing. I haven't read this book, so I don't know that it deserved the GG's Award... but I'll read it now! There are judges for literary awards who are deemed to have the qualifications to make recommendations, and they recommended this book. Why should a GG's Award book NOT include challening & mature themes? Those who seek to ban this apparently feel that young people don't deal with some pretty heavy issues in their real lives already. And if the themes are this challening, perhaps it's a brilliant opportunity for parents and children to read the book at the same time and discuss it.

I've heard Reid being interviewed a couple of times now, and I am so impressed with this young talent! I want to read it and I want my son - 15 - to read it too!

I've heard this book is a great read and have added it to my list for this year. I believe in the point of view of this petition.

I have just finished reading this book. The story is hauntingly beautiful, and is one that needs to be read by young and old.

Have put a hold on it at the Toronto Public Library and am looking forward to reading it.
