Not having a social worker head the department says social workers can’t even head their own schools

This profession relies on the expertise and experience of seasoned social workers!

A qualified Dean of social work should hold a PhD in social work. Any other degree is not acceptable and lessens the reputation of your college of social work.

To the leaders of the Columbia University and to the faculty and staff of Columbia University School of Social Work - Really, I mean really?

What are you doing? How could anyone other than a PhD in Social Work be in this position?

I agree that any Social Work program should be lead by a experienced person with a minimum of a Doctorate in Social Work.

I agree the position would be most effective if held by someone with a doctorate in social work with appropriate work experience to ensure the integrity of the profession. Otherwise, it will undermines all of the hard work done to get title protection laws and similar actions to validate our profession.

I think it is a slap in the face of our profession for a non social worker to be appointed dean...I am opposed to the appointment.

While I am confident that Dr. Begg will competently lead CSSW, I, too am disappointed. CSSW has had an interim dean for three years and I'm sure conducted a national search, yet they selected a non-social work professional from within Columbia University. Certainly there must have been premiere social work scholars who were considered for this job? What happened?

I am disheartened - as a student - to hear of this appointment. While I do not doubt that your candidate is an experienced professional, I question this appointment as the best model for the student body.
