Dear Chelsea FC, As fans of the club and fans of the Premiership in the US we are writing to ask you to apologize to radio presenter and lifelong fan of Chelsea FC Steven Cohen. In the heat of a nasty boycott of Cohen based upon his comments about HIllsborough the club released a press release denouncing Cohen and his views. This in our eyes was unprecedented. It also fueled a hateful campaign that resulted in the lives of Cohen's step children being threatened and the demise of the only over the air daily show that covers the beautiful game (while Cohen has return with a subscription service after almost a year nothing has replaced it). It was wrong to denounce Cohen. While it is clear his views on the Hillsborough incident do not match those of the club or conventional wisdom, his show was not about the incident, and we are not aware of other incidents where the club has denounced an individual person for an opinion. The unprecedented step of denouncing Cohen fueled an out of control campaign of hatred and raises real questions. Chelsea has not in the past condemned individual members associated with the National Front. Chelsea has never sought our or condemned individual members of groups like the headhunters who have committed crimes outside the ground in the name of their support of Chelsea FC. While we believe it is correct for Chelsea to state and for Chelsea fans to stand in solidarity with the victims of Hillsborough. It is wrong and hypocritical for the club to attack a supporter for his opinion about the incident when fans with even worse opinions while admonished in a general statement against racism are not singled out individually. Further, Chelsea's statement upped the proverbial ante and resulted in Cohen's step children being threatened. A general statement not naming Cohen would have done just fan to clarify the position. Further, while other organizations and individuals have dropped the boycott including John Barnes and Stevie Nichols (assocaited with Liverpool FC), and other clubs like Harry Redknapp the manager of Tottenham Spurs have appeared on air, Chelasea FC are maintaining a boycott of Cohen and by consequence American fans of the game Chelsea FC recently rejected even the mention of Cohen in an article, as if that rejection did not also signal a rejection of the many fans and followers of World Football Daily in America including many Chelsea fans. This rejection is long after the Liverpool supporters clubs have withdrawn their boycott and the managers of clubs from Hull to Spurs have appeared on Cohen's show. As a result of this gratuitous treatment many of us do not blame Cohen for dropping the club and giving away (mostly for charity) his Chelsea memorabilia. The denunciation of Cohen was unprecedented and gratuitous. We ask that you offer an official apology to Cohen. Such an apology would not endorse his views but would restore the normal relationship between fan and club. We sign as members of the football community and fans of Chelsea FC to ask you to set this situation right with a formal apology to Cohen for attacking him as an individual when the role of a football club is not to police the private views of its fans especially when it does not necessarily police the views of all its fans or the individual actions of a substantial group of them. We ask for this apology forthwith. Thank You, American Fans of Chelsea FC and World Football Daily
