One of the Missouri Valley Football Conference's all-time winningest coaches, Don Patterson (historically referred to as "Coach P") led the Leathernecks to three NCAA playoff berths, a pair of Gateway Football Conference titles and a No. 1 national ranking in 2003. In his decade as head coach, Patterson produced 108 all-conference honorees, 34 academic all-conference selections, 37 academic all-conference selections, 59 All-Americans, including two consensus all-Americans, and two academic All-Americans.

Coach P led Western Illinois to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in 2000 (first round), 2002 (second round) and 2003 (second round). Western Illinois won Gateway league titles in 2000 and '02.

Coach P has been honored with the MVC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure (2000, 2002). Furthermore, Coach P has produced four MVC Offensive Player of the Year, two MVC Defensive Player of the Year, and one Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.

Coach P could be one of the most influential people that WIU has ever known. His accomplishments while at WIU speak for themselves. He was able to assist the entire athletic department by putting together great teams with young men from all walks of life to come together and play against large schools which we know greatly assisted on many levels financially and for the exposure. Many of his players have gone on to become successful Coaches on different levels, along with some that are the top trainers in the nation for football and some that have gone on to serve our nation. Coach P was not just a coach. He was a leader, mentor and to many of us a father. WIU's HOF is lacking without Coach P as a part of it.

Coach P is one of the greatest coaches I've ever had in my life! He taught me not only about football, but how to compete, how to be a leader, how to be a man. All these attributes have helped me far beyond my playing years!

I always enjoyed watching Coach Patterson's teams play. They were always well coached, well prepared, physical and disciplined teams and always played hard nosed Leatherneck football! Coach Patterson has earned the right to be in the Western Illinois Hall of Fame! Brian Spotts

I can't think of someone who is more deserving of getting into the WIU HOF than Coach P. A fantastic coach and an even better person.

Coach P is the 3rd most important and influential man that I have had in my life behind my Grandfather and Father. He molded me into the man that I am today and I will be forever grateful to him. Coach and Mrs. P absolutely deserve this honor of being in the WIU Hall of Fame and quite honestly, it is an absolute shame that he hasn't already been inducted. As you can tell in all of these comments, he has done so much for the young men that he has coached over the years. ELECT COACH P TO THE WIU-HOF!!!!
