Closure of CDS Workshop: Impact on Student Experience

Disgraceful way that this news was released to the staff; and utterly illogical choice from the student perspective of groups chosen to close down.

A ludicrous decision to threaten the workshops and the ranges. If this goes ahead it will have a major impact on the site capability- and I will ensure students from my organisation are encouraged to apply elsewhere. Wake up Cranfield

As a current student, I think this will impact substantially on the quality of provision at the CDS - one of the strengths of studying here is the practical element, and that would be greatly diminished without the support of the workshop.

As a former Cranfield student I can say how different my studies would have been without the workshops and their staff. Not only is it one of the reasons I chose Cranfield over the six other universities I considered but those facilities and personnel played an increadibly big part in why I enjoyed my time at the university so much.

As an ex-student I know the benefit and knowledge these staff bring on a daily basis and it will be a disaster if they are lost!

The in-house workshop is highly effective: it delivers real benefit in instantly understanding the requirements of researchers and students. It is a false economy to rely on external workshop facilities where articulating the requirement will be time consuming. Design, development and prototyping will all increase in complexity and therefore cost if required to be done externally. This decision is a false economy.

Every establishment needs to adjust to changing circumstances. However, this sweeping change appears to be have been made without consultation with those impacted, namely staff and especially students. The reliance is on the consultation period. This may be too late. Only now are the true primary and secondary order effects being brought to light. Will anyone listen?

At times like this, all units should operate as efficiently as possible and reviewing activities followed by some adjustments is no doubt appropriate. But closing the workshop will decrease the quality of research and that will lead to less funding.

Not a very clever or astute management decision.

Closing the workshop is short-sighted. It will have an immediate and detrimental impact on existing CDS researchers (including myself) and in the longer term, on CDS' ability to meet the requirements of new students and staff. It will almost certainly have a negative impact on recruiting those people upon whose work our reputation is so dependent.

Please don't close the workshop

The workshop were instrumental in construction of a cyber defence simulator, thier skill and professionalism was, and is world class. The closure will materially affect both CDS, defac and the 415i strategy.

The workshops has have a great impact on my research work. Most of parts in my experiments produced in the workshops. The workshops has expertise in several works area and so far, they have helped me a lot in designing my works. And the workshops is still working on my order.

The CDS workshop is so helpful and it will be very difficult for me who need their help in several aspect of my research. Can't stand losing them please on my PhD program. Please kindly reconsider.

The impact of the workshop is real, they helped me to create an artwork for the Cranfield symposium in November 2015, I have used this same artwork for different event during my PhD, for example the Bedford campus impact factor fair in May 2016 and in France in December 2016 during an innovation day organised by the ministry of defense. This promoted the dissemination of my research and the Cranfield image in the same time. It is therefore definitely in the interest of Cranfield to keep the workshop staff.

Terrible loss of of staff who bring an amazing level of experience, expertise and knowledge. It was seriously damage the student experience at Cranfeils University and would be detrimental to many research projects.

My research would nit have been of the same quality without the workshop.

The workshop provided valuable advice during my design projects and delivered amazing results. The loss of this facility will erode the output of the university.

As someone at the end of my PhD I cab honestly say I wouldn't have got this far without the support and expertise of the work and the same goes for many of my colleagues. Removing this resource from the university will have a detrimental impact on all future research projects.
