Closure of CDS Workshop: Impact on Student Experience

Since we are undergoing a technical course, workshops help us assist in our learning, also the workshop will be of great help in our projects.

The workshops were invaluable during my time previously at the University. Not only during the manufacture of items related to my project but on the problems associated with manufacturing such items; this advice hugely contributed to a successful project and has improved my knowledge of the practical side of manufacturing.

When I was here previously, the assistance from the workshop was invaluable in helping us test our project research (all syndicates, not just mine). They were not just a peripheral accessory, but played a significant role through their willingness, flexibility, and proactiveness to support my education. Now I am here again on my current course at Cranfield, I am concerned that my Thesis project will be substandard as the topics offered by Academics, and my selection, will be severely restrained by what I / we feel can realistically be delivered when a resource as valuable as the workshop is removed. I am at a loss to understand how an institution such as Cranfield can continue to deliver so many engineering based courses, and still believe that it can maintain its claim to be world leading, without organic workshop support on site.

This department provides a critical service to the MoD and Police Services. Better solicitation of funded research from Government and industry could better resolve financial shortfalls for the university

This is too important a resource to lose.

As a former student closure would driectky impact courses and academic performance.

I'm an ATO and am hopefully return to do the EOE masters. It would be detrimental to future courses were this to happen

We wouldn't have BTC without the CDS Workshop.

Fast turnaround to make adjustments on an item between firings on range is all that kept my project from going wrong and needing repeating. this could only be achieved with a workshop on site

As a previous student and soon to start further study here I feel that the closing of these facilities will have a large negative impact on my ability to work.

This is a very bad suggestion. It is high risk of negative impact on student experience and may result in CDS falling in university rankings. I think this is outrageous and is a short term gain for long term loss.

By far, the best parts of the BTC have been those subjects, lessons and practical experiments that have relied on the workshops input. The technical knowledge provided by the workshop staff on ballistics, weapon technology and protection is second to none and the decision to close this facility is nothing short of foolish. Without the workshop, I would be strongly advising against anyone attending the BTC in the future as it will not be anything like the course it is today.

As a military student at Cranfield this would have a significant impact on our education and therefore future effectiveness. We learn the most by practical work as we return to education and the loss of practical facilities would heavily impact our learning.

The workshop is an invaluable resource for the entire campus.

The reputation of the University is at risk should the proposal go ahead. Additionally the experience of the staff members within the department is invaluable and will detrimentally affect future studies and research

Invaluable expertise and a much needed resource, particularly for non-specialists who nevertheless require fabrication of various items for their research.

Ade, Mike and Co. helped a great deal in setting up the thesis and without them, I don't think the standard of work that CDS currently maintains will be upheld for future students.

I am at CDS because of its reputation for practical excellence.

The workshop is a vital university capability which allows students to work alongside engineering staff to develop and refine the test rigs which enable practical experimentation. This this capability is lost then it will reduce the quality of research and increase the burden on students to fund scarce funding.
