We the undersigned of residents Neptune and Jacksonville Beach petition the Mayor and City Council of Jacksonville Beach to do the right thing and permanently close the gate at Lakeside Drive, and provide a solution that cannot be undone by a simple majority Council vote, which leaves us vulnerable the next sitting council. This gate was constructed in 2005, for one use only and that was to access the neighborhood on the other side, in the event of an emergency. The driving force behind this decision was the flooding of Kings Road bridge. Therefore, another way out of the neighborhood needed to be created. Lakeside Drive was designed as and has been a cul de sac for 38 years The folks on this cul-de-sac (Lakeside Dr.) do not want their quiet and safe street to be a cut-through or roadway. It is only a few vocal neighbors who want to, for convenience's sake have the gate open. Never mind, the hardship that this puts on the folks of Lakeside Drive. After all, it is not their cul de sac that is under attack. Ironically, these folks live on a safe and quiet cul de sac. JB did a traffic study and found that 1024 trips are made in and out of this street when the gate is open. When it is closed, as was intended, the number drops to approximately 45-95 trips. You can see how this would affect the quality of life of the neighbors. Lakeside is not the only street affected. Arden Way, Tallwood, Oakwood, Pinewood, 12th, Nightfall, Seagate, and Kings Road all feel the impact of the added traffic. P.S.....there will always be an access to walk, bike and maybe golf cart.
