The city finally blinked and confirmed that the cleaning services are staying put which is honestly such a huge relief after all the back and forth. It is pretty wild how much noise we managed to make about these streets and I really appreciate everyone who backed this up because …
Dear Mayor Nagin,
We, the reidents of and visitors to New Orleans demand that you continue to clean the streets in the French Quarter. We choose to have our tax dollars spent wisely and to the benefit of residents and visitors alike. As such, we demand imediate retraction of the letter sent to SDT Waste & Debris Services directing them to discontinue cleaning streets in the French Quarter and/or immediately negotiate a new sanitation contract to clean the streets of the French Quarter.
As we work to rebuild our city, it is imperative that we maintain the beauty of the French Quarter in order to draw new residents and tourists. It is with this goal in mind that we demand the city maintain clean and welcoming streets in all of New Orleans.
I have been spending hours on the phone trying to reach someone at the sanitation department who actually knows why the contract was cut in the first place. The silence from the city is honestly deafening but the feedback from people who walk these blocks every morning is just heartbreaking because this is our home and we deserve better.

The quarter is already a mess. If we stop cleaning it now nobody is going to want to come back here. Do your job.

Tourists keep this city alive. If the streets are gross they will just stop coming. Think about the local economy for once.
