In this term of science, we were challenged to create a petition to collect signatures to help stop the pollution of New Zealand, and more importantly, North Shores waters. Similar to what another group is focusing on, Auckland harbour is more polluted than ever. The rubbish in the ocean is killing the pipi, shellfish and mussel beds that would filter out sediment, mud and dirt particles, filtering water and creating habitat for small sea creatures. In the last 200 years, the amount of rubbish has increased and the number of shellfish beds has decreased. There used to be 15,000 sq kilometres of the beds. Not only the shellfish but 11 species of the caught fish in the gulf are expected to entirely disappear forever. We must reuse, reduce and recycle. The three most powerful words that can benefit the gulf. Future generations will want to swim and play in the sea. What if they can’t? The three words- Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

There has been helping in the past, the government providing $200,000 to clean the beds. Another $200,000 was raised to support the effort of pollution

We ask for your signing of our petition to bring more awareness to the fact and to stop polluting our environment. Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. Every day, bit-by-bit, North Shore waters are being polluted, destroyed and wiped away. Please make an effort to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle yourself by-

  1. Re-using containers
  2. Re-duce the amount of waste, especially plastic, that goes into your rubbish bins.
  3. Recycle books or old things in your home to continue their lives and reduce paper or other waste.
