Respect the right to organize at Clark University!
The electronic petition is specifically meant to be signed by parents of Clark students, Alumni and study-abroad students. In the academic year of 2009-2010, as workers began to organize for union representation due to poor working conditions and disrespect, they began to face intimidation and harassment by their employer Sodexo, Inc. Members of the Clark community became aware of these important issues because Sodexo is subcontracted by Clark University. We believe that at a university that prides itself in its motto, “Challenge Convention, Change Our World," no worker should feel threatened or disrespected in the workplace. In response to this situation, we, the undersigned students, student groups, faculty, workers, alumni, and concerned community members of Clark University demand that the Clark administration permanently adopt the following: 1) Clark University will immediately enforce a campus-wide policy of neutrality concerning the process of unionization to be followed by all of its subcontractors. 2) Clark University will tangibly support the process of unionization in the most expedient and fair manner for all university and subcontracted employees that desire union representation. 3) Clark University will enact Clark Unite!'s proposed Labor Code of Conduct for Clark University in a timely manner through the appropriate administrative channels. 4) No resources controlled by Clark University, financial or otherwise, will go towards supporting anti-union activities. We affirm the internationally recognized right of all workers to form associations in conjunction with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (art. 23) and want Clark University to be an institution that affirms and upholds this right, so that workers may associate without fear of intimidation, harassment, and/or discrimination.
