All people, gay or straight, should enjoy the same rights.

The Problem: Civil unions are the only legal recognition of relationships for same-sex couples in Nevada. 13 states have legalized gay marriage, and 20 states ban all types of legal recognition for same-sex couples. All 50 states recognize all relationships of straight couples. Equal rights are not enjoyed because of the sexual orientation or certain couples.

The Solution:

The question should not be whether or not to legalize same-sex marriage, it should be how to do so. Marriage is a religious institution, and so should be at the discretion of religious denominations to make the decision on any kind of marriage, even gay marriage. On the other hand, the legal aspect of marriage is the sanctioned union of persons who commit to one another, forming a familial and economic bond. Therefore, the basic political impact of marriage is the recognition of two persons as a economic and familial unit; fundamentally the same entity as a civil union. The idea is that the government should not concern themselves with marriage, only with civil union: all existing marriages should be amended as civil unions, and from here on out, instead of issuing marriage licences, there should only be licenses for civil unions. Since marriage is a religious institution, it should be dealt with through religious organizations. After this change is made, those seeking to be married should pursue this end through their choice of religion, and doing so would not affect their political status. The morality of gay marriage is of no consequence to the government, and should not be debated in such venues. The argument should be excluded from political debates, and, if it cannot end, should be contained within religious sectors. The government has nothing to do with marriage, only with the economic and familial ties created through a civil union. On this concept lies the rationale for elimination of marriage as a political institution and the integration of civil union as a replacement for marriage. Couples joined by civil union should enjoy the same political and economic benefits as couples have always possessed under the legal contract of marriage.
