We call on the City of Ada, MN to desist in the practice of disconnecting residential water and electricity for slightly late payments, as well as the imposition of a $10 late fee (plus finance charge) for failure to pay within ten days of notice. As the United Nations noted with regard to Detroit, Michigan (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jun/26/detroit-violating-human-right-water-un-says/), access to water is a fundamental human right that should not be denied to those with the inability to pay. In the case of Ada, those who are least able to afford it face not just termination of their water and power, but also additional charges and deposits to have it restored. This is inherently unjust and should be ended immediately. We further call for an investigation and accounting of water and sewer rates, as well as the city's responsibility for maintaining the sewer system.
