City, give Wopumnes Tribe back "rights of access" to their sacred site

History is a great economic stimulator. Authentic Native American and Western history promote tourism. Give the big box stores, round-abouts, and kitch second priority!

Life would be much simpler for everyone if the City Council would just follow what is within their General Plan and policies and work with those that want to help them to facilitate the preserving of our historical and cultural resources. Instead it seems they would rather spend hours in Board meetings mocking and ridiculing those that dare oppose their build out plan for Placerville.

Our Indigenous Peoples have been forced to give away SO MUCH to society’s way of life. PLEASE consider how hurtful this is to them. They deserved to keep land that was sacred to them, where they continued to believe the Creator gave them connection to their land, their ancestors, and all living beings, so they could watch over, and protect it. Again, and again, the government has lied or ignored agreements and treaties that guaranteed them at least some of their sacred land. This has happened over and over, and shows that our government, and in this case, the City of Placerville, has no integrity when it comes to inclusivity, and respect for Native American tribes, starting with the Gold Rush and onward from there (and in other parts of the country, even earlier than that). The City of Placerville and El Dorado County have the chance to do something right here, even though they have done many things wrong in the past. Let’s honor the Natives that lived here long before us, and start showing them the respect they deserve. Please don’t build over their sacred sites, but instead, keep them safe and be an example for the public, other local governments, and our US government that our Natives came before us, we took their land, and while that may not be able to be undone now, we can show respect in this moment, and do the right thing. Don’t break another promise. Don’t treat these people as if their beliefs have no value. Let them keep their sacred land. Find a way to build around the area in question, so they can rebuild what was taken from them without any notice to the Tribe. After every horrible broken promise, and inconsiderate action, the least we can do is repeal the Resolution, and give the Wopumnes the Tribal Consultation Status they need to protect their sacred sites while the City continues to build and grow. It’s the right thing to do.
